Pietro Leonardi has admitted that his transmission of ‘negativity’ into Parma’s psyche is to blame for their slow start to the season.

The Gialloblu find themselves third from bottom in Serie A after suffering five defeats in their first six matches of the new campaign.

This is a far cry from the euphoria of last season’s Europa League finish, even as that ended in acrimony.

The recent flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region has been another source of hardship for Parma to contend with, and the CEO has held himself fully accountable for the side’s struggles ahead of Sunday’s trip to Atalanta.

“In Bergamo, we have one more incentive – to also restore the city of Parma which has been damaged by this calamity [flooding],” Leonardi has said at a Press conference today.

“We will not say that the trip to Bergamo symbolises a crossroads for us. It’s true that we find ourselves in a delicate situation, and I take full responsibility, but it is still early in the season.

“I’m only concerned about our psyche in the long run, not just a single match. I think we need to change from a psychological perspective.

“Bergamo is not a crossroads, but it is one of the steps to get to our goal.

“I'm not talking about tactics, but the work [that needs to be done] on the players’ heads. It is a task I think I have succeeded in doing for the past few years.

“During the first part of the season, subconsciously I sent negative vibes to the team.

“It's not a coincidence that the players who are doing things are the new ones. These players are mentally free and are making the most of this.

“We must try, as much as we can, to help those in difficulty, from a psychological standpoint.”

Leonardi also updated on Jonathan Biabiany’s condition, as he is yet to receive the all-clear to play.

“Jonathan must clear a precise path of tests, with absolute rest, which has not yet ended. Then, if all goes well, he will start athletic work.”
