Genoa defender Luca Antonini is at the centre of a controversy – despite his efforts in helping locals after the recent floods.

Antonini, a Scudetto winner with Milan in 2011, was pictured helping local people in shovelling mud from their houses after floods, which have caused an estimated €200m of damage.

However, some controversy arose after it was pointed out that Antonini was wearing a Genoa tracksuit top in the photo – leading to suggestions that the 32-year-old was trying to attract publicity for the sponsors of the club, allegations which the player vigorously rejects.

“The top was from the previous season, so I can’t use it when I’m with the team,” Antonini posted on his Instagram page.

“I later gave it to a Genoese girl who was shovelling with me. Someone saw me with the shirt, and had the gall to say that I was doing publicity for my sponsor.

“I didn’t think about what to wear when I went to remove the mud. I just put on my gloves and boots and I went.”
