Claudio Marchisio admits Italy “ought to prove ourselves more” against the likes of Malta and Azerbaijan.

Friday’s slender 2-1 result was followed by this evening’s 1-0 win over 10-man Malta in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

“We should be auto-critical for what happened before Leo’s red card,” Marchisio told Rai Sport.

The Azzurri also ended the game with 10 men, as Leonardo Bonucci was sent off for a last man foul.

“It is not easy to face teams like this and Malta were even more clammed up than Azerbaijan, more tactically smart, but we are Italy and ought to prove ourselves more in these games.”

So far Antonio Conte’s famed attitude and determination has not made its way through to the Italy squad.

“It is only normal there isn’t as much time here as at club level, but the new players are settling in well adn this was only our second get-together.”

The next game is against joint Group H leaders Croatia at San Siro in November.

“We need to look at the positives, which are the four victories. We have to focus on giving more, as we are capable of so much more and Croatia will be fighting for the top of the group.”
