Coach Andrea Mandorlini believes the secret to Verona’s success is in their “so-called little old men” like Luca Toni.

Hellas are currently in joint fifth position in Serie A alongside Milan, despite selling stars like Juan Manuel Iturbe and Romulo this summer.

“We changed a great deal this season, but thanks to the so-called little old men and those who have been with me the longest, the newcomers are settling in quickly,” Mandorlini told Sky Sport Italia.

Top scorer Toni is 37, while new signing Javier Saviola is 32 and Mexican defender Rafael Marquez 35.

Another member of the old guard is Iceland international midfielder Emil Hallfredsson, who wrote a touching open letter to fans and teammates after the recent death of his father.

“I know him well, he has given me his all and is a lad of unique sensibility. He doesn’t speak much, but he doesn’t have to, as it’s all in his eyes.”
