Ciro Immobile thanked the fans in Palermo after Italy’s 2-1 victory over Azerbaijan and looked back on the World Cup debacle.
Giorgio Chiellini scored a brace as well as an own goal in tonight’s Euro 2016 qualifier.
“It was a good game, as playing in Europe you have to fight for every ball to bring home the result. Plus Giorgio was on fire!” he told Rai Sport.
Borussia Dortmund star Immobile was again paired with Sassuolo striker Simone Zaza.
“At the moment the Coach is choosing us, we are trying to give our best and you can’t score in every game, but the important thing is that the Nazionale wins. We are all here to help the team.
“I said we are an ‘ignorant’ pair because we don’t over-think things and just go for every ball, giving our all at every moment of the game.
“We could’ve finished off the game earlier and had chances, but the important thing is that the team won.
“The support from the crowd was extraordinary and we all stayed behind after the final whistle to thank them. We need Italy to return to being what it was before and the fans are really helping.”
Antonio Conte has won all three games in charge, scoring six goals and conceding one.
“The Coach has many ideas and we are trying to put them into practice, game after game. We had some difficulties in the first half, as Azerbaijan were closing up and there weren’t many spaces,” continued Immobile.
“I worked with him at Siena, so I know how he behaves with the group, including those who do not play regularly. He made me feel important there and is doing the same for everyone in the Italy squad, as we all feel involved and give our all.
“At the World Cup we were more or less the same players, so clearly something wasn’t right in Brazil.”
