Italy Under-21 Coach Gigi Di Biagio is “optimistic” after a 1-1 European Championship play-off draw in Slovakia.

The Azzurrini had taken the lead through Andrea Belotti, but conceded an Adam Zrelak equaliser.

“We were not organised enough or patient, but having said that we had numerous chances to win the game and double our lead,” Di Biagio told Rai Sport.

“We were not organised enough or patient, but having said that we had numerous chances to win the game and double our lead,” Di Biagio told Rai Sport.

“After a while we suffered as they fought back towards the end. Of course we have to be optimistic. It was the kind of game I expected, where Slovakia’s physicality and aggression caused us problems.”

The second leg is at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia – Sassuolo’s home arena – on Tuesday.
