Serie A clubs claim Government plans to make them pay for extra policing is tantamount to an illegal tax.

The plans are part of a new law to clamp down on violence in stadiums, forcing the clubs to pay for over-time when more police are required on match days.

“We ask with determination for this law to be cancelled,” said President of the Lega Serie A Maurizio Beretta.

“This introduces an extra tax with very dubious confines targeted only at football clubs. We trust our request will be accepted.

“The Government is not taking into account the enormous effort from the clubs to guarantee security, above all since 2007.”
