James Pallotta has explained the decision to invest in Roma, planning for 20 years with Rudi Garcia and an obstacle to television rights increasing.

The Giallorossi President is attending the Leaders in Football conference at Stamford Bridge today and was asked to discuss why he chose to invest in the Italian capital club.

“It’s Rome! Why Roma…” joked Pallotta to reporters with an expletive.

“My colleagues and I evaluated all the opportunities presented to us, we chose Roma because they are a club with great tradition and we had the opportunity to create a great project and then, in the end, because it is Roma!

“Club owners face the ultimate challenge, to win matches, build a business and maintain the budget.

“We have the most passionate fans, all they are after is transparency and honesty.

“Is Rudi Garcia our Sir Alex Ferguson? We are trying to build a path for many years to come, we are thinking of the next 20 years ahead.

“And our players? They have contractual terms at an average of three-and-a-half years, we are not trying to trade them.

“Serie A’s TV rights are much lower than those in the Premier League, but they will improve. Increasing the digital revenues for Roma is vital, but we would never be able to cable Rome – you would dig not half a metre and come across a chariot.”
