Inter President Erick Thohir has commented that to have a good team takes good directors, as he reflects on plans to expand the brand.

The Indonesian businessman has been active in looking to take the Nerazzurri to a new market, but has been working on the club alongside his other commitments, which include MLS side DC United.

“For this I try to be in Milan once a month and in the USA three times a year,” Thohir has explained today at the Leaders in Football conference.

“We need to have good leadership so as to build a strong team. I am getting regular reports from the team. We have brought in many good directors in the past seven months to Inter.

“At DC we changed all the directors, not because I liked or disliked certain people, but because I believe there needs to be a balance between sport and business.

“Football is a media product but also one of the consumer, we must present objectives to the directors and rely on qualified people.”

Thohir considered further the reason for his intentions to push Inter’s brand globally and particular to the Asian market.

“Europe is the economically stronger region, but Asia is growing. Asia is home to half of the world’s population and of the 260m Inter fans worldwide, 165m are Asian.

“We aim to expand our brand in Europe, but especially in Asia and the USA. We have opened three digital channels in Indonesia, launched three academies in China, one in Japan, one in India and are working towards Saudi Arabia.

“We want to grow the brand as well as the happiness of our supporters, and we have already received positive feedback. We must also strengthen the capacity of the city of Milan, which as you know is not only for football, but also fashion and food.”
