Pirlo is unexpectedly in the starting XI making his first Serie A appearance of the season after injury.

“We are glad to have him at our disposal,” director general Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“He has such important qualities, on and off the field, while he is an exemplary professional. He’ll be important for the Italy squad too.”

There was a transfer tug-of-war over the summer, as Iturbe seemed to be on the verge of joining Juventus, but switched to Roma within hours of Antonio Conte’s exit.

“He is a strong player and over the summer we tried to contact him, but evidently Roma had more disposable income at the time.

“Over the last three years Roma have closed the gap on Juventus and Rudi Garcia has found consistency. Sabatini also constructed a much stronger squad than last year, so they are a serious candidate for the Scudetto.”
