Walter Zenga says Juventus and Roma are unrivalled in Serie A and that Inter should follow Atletico Madrid’s example and back their Coach.

The Nerazzurri are under scrutiny following a surprise 4-1 defeat at home to Cagliari at the weekend, but for their former goalkeeper, thinking they are in contention for a title fight in the first place is not right.

“Juventus and Roma today are unrivalled,” Zenga has considered to Tuttosport today.

“For me, however, it is especially important to remember where they have come from.

“Roma have acquired the mentality that allows them to achieve results through responsibility and always wanting to improve, seeing every game as an ongoing challenge. The same goes for Juventus.”

Zenga, who confirmed he would willingly return to San Siro one day as Coach, commented on the Serpenti’s current place in the Serie A hierarchy.

“Do not forget that between 2010 and 2011, Inter won everything. We certainly are not talking about 15 years ago, but I do find a substantial difference with Juventus and Roma.

“The likes of Buffon, Marchisio, Totti, De Rossi and Florenzi are the bases from which those clubs have built something important and where Inter are a little lacking.”

A little lacking is also the fans’ support of Walter Mazzarri.

“It is difficult to understand because last year Inter finished in fifth place after a year in ninth. This year, the Scudetto for Mazzarri will be the Champions League and finishing in third place.

“As a former Inter player I would not dare, as others do, to criticise, and I think that the accident that was the Cagliari match will soon be absorbed.

“But I believe that in a club, to return to winning, there should be synergy and consistency between the five basic components – the club, team, Coach, Press and fans. This Inter has not seen this yet. Mazzarri should be helped.

“A good example is Atletico Madrid – Simeone has created a microcosm where everyone is rowing in the same direction and he has managed to bridge the gap to Real Madrid.

“In Italy an experiment of this type is being carried out by Mihajlovic at Sampdoria, but we need to see how they go after the first few defeats under Ferrero…”
