Sinisa Mihajlovic said Sampdoria are “deservedly third” in Serie A after beating Genoa 1-0 in the Derby della Lanterna.

The Blucerchiati are in third place behind Juventus” data-scaytid=”8″>Juventus and Roma, pending Udinese’s” data-scaytid=”9″>Udinese’s game with Parma tomorrow evening.

“It is pleasing to be third and I think we are deservedly third, as we are the only team along with Juventus and Roma to remain unbeaten,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“As I told the lads, this victory is worth little unless we beat Atalanta” data-scaytid=”13″>Atalanta next week. We have to keep focused and keep working.

“I have to compliment both sets of fans for the spectacle, but also the players for a really tough, masculine derby that was fought hard to the end.

“I think we won deservedly and I am happy, as this is the right spirit. We are on the right path. We are slowly becoming a team, as even during moments of difficulty we feel that we can win, don’t really adapt to our opponents and stick to our guns.”

Genoa Coach Gian Piero Gasperini insisted Sampdoria’s goal should’ve been ruled offside.

“I never comment on refereeing decisions. Everyone has their own opinion, but I’d have been happy with my team’s spirit, attitude and determination even if we had not won.

“I want to compliment our captain, Gastaldello, as he learned this morning he wouldn’t be playing and I know how much he cared about this game, but he behaved like a real captain and a real man.”

President Massimo Ferrero is a passionate presence in the stands and ran on to the field to celebrate with the players after the final whistle.

“He is someone who keeps his word. If he makes a promise, he keeps it. I think people really like his personality and I know my players do too. I hope we can continue seeing him celebrate!”

Stefano Okaka had another strong performance, while Manolo Gabbiadini got the winning goal in front of Italy Coach Antonio Conte this evening.

“I speak with all the players, as I think it is fundamental for a Coach to get inside their heads and find the medicine they need.

“I annoy Okaka every week by telling him what he needs to do in order to improve. He’s working hard, holds up the ball, scores goals, provides assists and helps the defence. I keep telling him he can be one of the best centre-forwards in Italy, as he has the attributes.

“Manolo needs to improve in his determination and believe in himself more, so take players on one-on-one. He knows I get more annoyed when he holds back than when he tries something and it goes wrong.”
