The Frenchman has impressed in his early work with the Rossoneri and has sat down with the Gazzetta dello Sport to consider where it all began, with a summer meeting with Adriano Galliani and Coach Inzaghi.

“I had analysed other offers, I was thinking about my future, then came in Milan,” Menez has recalled on securing a Bosman move to the club at that meeting.

“Galliani and Inzaghi gave me an appointment in Ibiza and said so many things that are important for my career and for the future. So it was easy to choose to wear this shirt.”

The 27-year-old explained further his affinity with Inzaghi.

“When a person gives you something beautiful, you feel compelled to give back the same beauty. It is not only a duty but a pleasure.

“To me, life is like that. With the Coach things have been good from the start and I thank him. But this is only the beginning – we have so many games and so many things to do together.

“I think it is right that there is a small barrier between the Coach and the players. But, Inzaghi has an excellent relationship with the whole group, he talks to everyone, not just me.

“What do I like about him? He lives for football, he reminds me of Lacombe, my first Coach at Sochaux. He is still young and you see that he wants to do a lot for this club.”

Menez was asked where Milan can realistically aim this season.

“To the Scudetto, I really believe that. And the minimum target is to qualify for the Champions League. Milan can play with anyone.

“And personally? Scoring more than 10 goals – in Italy if someone says Menez, you think ‘ah yes, the one who scored four times a year’. No longer will this be so.

“And then I want to return to the national team – in two years France are playing in the European Championships and I want to be there.”
