The tactician had taken some time off from August 28 to deal with personal issues and today confirmed he would not be able to continue as Coach.

The 49-year-old will remain with AZ as assistant manager, handing the main job to his former second in command Alex Pastoor.

“The stress I experienced was more than I would have liked,” said Van Basten.

“The palpitations happened to me several times over the last years. I thought I could overcome it and that things would get better.

“I worked hard at recovery and followed the necessary courses of treatment. I wanted to keep going but they kept coming back. There were two solutions: to do something else or to change the way I currently work.

“That is why I asked AZ to change my responsibility to better suit me and so that I can continue.”

Van Basten was the star player in Arrigo Sacchi’s ‘Grande Milan’ team of the 1980s and early 1990s.

Sacchi was also forced to retire from management due to stress-related heart problems.
