Rafa Benitez said he’ll “see if it is possible to continue together” with Napoli, as his contract expires in June 2015.

“I heard that some were surprised I took a few days off in Liverpool, but if my family lives there and I spent all summer away from them, it’s only normal,” shrugged the Coach in his Press conference.

“It’s not as if the team is in a delicate moment. I talk to my players every day, many of whom were away on international duty, and have faith in my staff.

“I was also surprised to hear people claim I don’t have a good rapport with President De Laurentiis. He comes from the world of cinema, but is doing brilliantly well in football.

“He’ll go to America now, but as soon as he’s back we will discuss a contract renewal and see if it is possible to continue together. We are preparing the squad for January and the future.”

“The President performed a miracle, taking this club from Serie C to the Champions League within financial parameters. We had a fantastic transfer strategy, as those who left were reserves who wouldn’t play against Juventus, Roma or in the other important fixtures.

“If Jorginho goes in front of Behrami in the pecking order, that is Behrami’s problem. We did what we wanted to do and have a strong squad.”

Benitez also hit out at reporters and the ultras for their complaints about the club strategy, especially as season ticket sales have plummeted.

“We are not afraid to say the word Scudetto. We must go forward together, I know you journalists and all the fans want to win. If the supporters are not standing behind us, we lost 20 per cent of our effectiveness.

“We know that some clubs are stronger than we are, but we need to push in the same direction. The football is powered by sentiment here. We want to grow and become stronger.

“A journalist who works in Turin writes one headline on Napoli, but one who works in Naples must think before writing to stir up chaos. Our watchword must be unity.”
