Piero Ausilio reveals Milan only signed Giacomo Bonaventura thanks to Inter releasing their Atalanta agreement.

The Nerazzurri had been heavily linked with Bonaventura before he made a surprise transfer deadline day move to their city rivals.

“Inter had reserved two players and organised the situation for some time,” director Ausilio told the Corriere dello Sport.

“The respective clubs were only waiting for Inter to call and offer the contract. When Guarin stayed, we advised the clubs involved, including Atalanta.

“Inter had reserved Bonaventura, but we released him and he became an opportunity for someone else. Perhaps until 20.30 on Monday Milan didn’t even know the player was on the market.”

The Nerazzurri were relatively quiet on deadline day, as Guarin failing to agree terms with Zenit, Benfica and Valencia saw their market grind to a halt.

“I am satisfied and my conscience is clear, because we respected the directions given by the club. Inter are under the microscope of Financial Fair Play and we had to take that into account.

“We reduced the wage bill and now we are down to around €70m, while our average age is two and a half years lower than in the past.

“We declared Kovacic and Icardi were not for sale, and they remained. With Vidic we anticipated the market and are happy to have him, as he’s a great personality.

“With players like Dodo, Medel, M’Vila and Osvaldo, we signed four men who will be important for the present and future of Inter.”
