Marcello Lippi can “see from a distance that the Italy squad” has been revitalised by Antonio Conte.

The Azzurri recovered from the World Cup debacle by beating Holland 2-0 in a friendly and face their first competitive game on Tuesday with a Euro 2016 qualifier in Norway.

“I am very happy for Antonio and everyone, for Italian football that needed a confidence boost,” Lippi told La Nazione.

“Conte brought back enthusiasm, I think that can be said without rushing to judgment. Antonio did very well on his debut as Coach.

“There is still a rapport of trust between us and every now and then we chat. He called me last week,” revealed the Guangzhou Evergrande boss and 2006 World Cup winner.

“Do the players appreciate Conte’s approach? I heard a few comments and can also see from a distance that the Italy squad has the hunger, readiness and desire to make up for the World Cup.

“That is a good sign, as it is important and necessary to feel that way. It goes without saying that young players are fundamental for our football, but must also be placed alongside the more experienced members of the Nazionale. The history of football teaches us that.”
