The midfielder has been sidelined since late May after breaking his leg in Italy’s World Cup warm-up friendly against the Republic of Ireland.

The 29-year-old was initially expected to be unavailable until December, but his recovery is going better than hoped.

Montolivo will face a crucial fitness test at the end of this month which means he could potentially be back to full training in October, with the intention of playing again a month later.

The former Atalanta man joined the Diavolo on a free transfer in the summer of 2012 after his contract at Fiorentina expired.

He was handed the captain’s armband at San Siro on the eve of the 2013-14 campaign.
