“Van Ginkel resisted initially. It’s not that he didn’t want to join us – he just thought that he could get into the Chelsea team.

“But Mourinho is a great Coach, and told the lad that after an eight-month lay-off through injury, coming here would be good for him.

“I then asked [countryman Nigel] De Jong to speak to him, and Fernando Torres as well. Eventually he said yes.”
