Bayern Munich deny reports their director is in Italy for Mehdi Benatia, so Manchester United and Chelsea still have hope.

This morning German newspaper Bild and Sport 1 had announced Bayern technical director Michael Reschke was flying in to Rome for negotiations.

The Roma centre-back is valued at a minimum of €30m and that price-tag could escalate amid a bidding war between Bayern, Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, this evening Bayern sources told another German paper, Suddeutsche Zeitung, that Reschke was not in Italy after all.

The situation remains in the balance, but it’s increasingly likely Roma will part with Benatia to raise funds for other transfers.

Manchester United and Bayern Munich are both desperate to pick up a defender, as Louis van Gaal is unimpressed with his selection and Bayern have lost Javi Martinez for seven months to a knee injury.

Meanwhile, the Corriere dello Sport claimed this evening that Manchester United were considering another emergency alternative in the form of Milan veteran Philippe Mexes.
