Lazio’s Miroslav Klose has backed Fiorentina’s Mario Gomez to make a return to the Germany national team fold.

The veteran forward has recently retired from international duty as a World Cup winner and record goalscorer.

Speaking to German outlet Bild, the 36-year-old insisted Gomez would have been part of Joachim Low’s triumphant squad himself had it not been for an injury riddled season with his club.

“Mario Gomez will definitely be back,” Klose said. “He had a terrible injury, otherwise he would also have been a world champion.

“Now he will come back and I wish him well.”

Klose also explained his own decision to bring to an end his glittering international career.

“After I made the announcement I received a lot of text messages and calls from friends, but I had already decided my path.

“If I make a decision, it’s for definite. I met Joachim Low twice while I was on holiday in Sardinia, they were very good discussions.

“But even at the first meeting I said to him that the idea I had in mind was to retire. Low advised me to sleep on it for a few nights.

“I did that, but when we met the second time I said to him, ‘Jogi, I am no longer torn, I’ve made my decision and I’m stopping.’”
