Cristiano Ronaldo scored both goals as Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid beat Sevilla 2-0 for the European Super Cup.

Cardiff hosted the traditional August clash between Champions League holders Real and Europa League winners Sevilla, as Carlo Ancelotti gave James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos their debuts and Cristiano Ronaldo returned from injury. Alberto Moreno wasn’t even on the bench ahead of an imminent move to Liverpool.

Both goalkeepers needed reaction saves to block from Gareth Bale, Ronaldo and Vitolo following defensive errors.

The deadlock was finally broken on the half-hour mark, as local lad Bale burst down the left and whipped in a cross for Cristiano Ronaldo to come sliding in at the back post.

However, confusion at the back allowed Daniel Carriço to shoot from six yards and only a desperate Iker Casillas rush off his line prevented an equaliser.

Ronaldo made it 2-0 after the restart, finishing off a good passing move with a fierce rising drive that bent back Beto’s gloves.

Beto flew for a crucial one-handed save at the near stick on a James Rodriguez screamer and in the final minute Casillas palmed a Grzegorz Krychowiak effort round the post.
