Stefan de Vrij has explained why he chose to sign for Lazio this summer when there was apparently interest from the Premier League.

After impressing at the World Cup for the Netherlands, the centre-back was linked with a number of clubs including following Louis van Gaal to Manchester United.

However, the 22-year-old this week completed a move to Lazio and on from receiving a hero’s welcome at the airport by supporters, has been presented to the media today.

“I am very happy for my arrival – at 1.30 in the morning the airport was full of fans,” reflected De Vrij on that notable reception at Fiumicino Airport [below].

“I did not expect a welcome like that. It was amazing to discover all those fans there and it showed their personality. I felt incredibly loved, I understood they were waiting for me.

“Lazio was the only club really interested in me before the World Cup, whilst certainly after the World Cup I evaluated other offers, but the one I had the most feeling for was from Lazio. This was the best choice.

“When my agents told me of the offer from Lazio, I wanted to listen, even if just out of politeness. I spoke with [sporting director Igli] Tare and had a good conversation, Lazio’s plans seemed good to me and then I started to better study the club and I was excited.

“I spoke with Nigel de Jong, Pelle and also Van Gaal and they all had positive responses – these conversations had played a role for me.

“Could I have gone to the Premier League? No, Lazio was always my first choice. I am excited to play here, I want to help the team improve and to better myself. I want to become more complete.

“Am I the next Jaap Stam? I have so much respect for Stam, but I prefer to believe to be unique. I do not like to compare myself to other players.

“I can only speak for myself, but certainly the Italian League is the best place for me.”
