Lazio President Claudio Lotito insists it’s no great loss to see Davide Astori join Roma instead. “He’s not Diego Maradona.”
The fans are in revolt after another transfer target slipped away, especially as the Cagliari defender went to their arch rivals for an affordable loan plus option to buy for a total €7m.
“I, President of Lazio, never said we would’ve signed Astori,” he told Libero newspaper.
“I didn’t name names, it was all media speculation. I do want to tell the fans we will reinforce the squad.
“Besides, with all due respect to Astori, he’s not Diego Maradona...”

Lotito is backing FIGC Presidential candidate Carlo Tavecchio for urgent reforms.
“We need to cut Serie A back to 18 teams as soon as possible, both to aid organisation and finances. We must create synergy.
“Let’s not forget Tavecchio’s experience, which is united with my philosophy.”
Juventus President Andrea Agnelli is openly against Tavecchio and pushing for Demetrio Albertini as Federation chief, but remains on his own in Serie A along with Roma.
“There is no hostility with Agnelli,” assured Lotito. “We have two different philosophies and the collective interest prevailed.”
