Napoli starlet Jorginho reveals he wants to play for Italy, even though Naples reminds him of Brazil.
Although born and raised in Brazil, he has been in Italy for many years and has been called up – but did not play – for the Azzurri at Under-21 level.
“So far I haven’t had to make a choice, because I didn’t receive any offers,” Jorginho told the Corriere dello Sport.
“I can say the Azzurri jersey is clearly on top of my preferences. I’d have no doubts, I would immediately accept a call from Coverciano.”
The 22-year-old midfielder joined from Hellas Verona in January and between both clubs scored eight goals in 38 games over Serie A and the Coppa Italia.
“I won’t make predictions over Napoli, though I can guarantee that we players will give our all to take the club as high as it deserves to be.
“Naples is a very… Brazilian city. I already knew that before I came here and was not disappointed. I loved it straight away.”
Jorginho has been tipped as one of the heirs to Andrea Pirlo in the Italy set-up.
“As a child my idol was Kaka, but I tried playing in his position and it didn’t suit me. My place is in front of the defence, I have no doubts.
“That is why I took inspiration from Pirlo, the best in that role. His secret is that it’s rare to see him get it wrong. He makes even the most complicated scenarios seem simple, never giving the ball away.”
