“I am ambitious and I want to win,” declared Roma Coach Rudi Garcia ahead of tomorrow’s friendly with Liverpool.

The Giallorossi will play Liverpool in a friendly at Boston’s Fenway Park on Wednesday at 23.30 UK time (22.30 GMT).

“I am very happy to start the new season, as the summer vacation felt too long this year,” began the Coach in his Press conference.

Roma finished second only to a record-breaking Juventus in Serie A last season, so with Antonio Conte gone do they become the new favourites?

“I will say I was surprised when I heard of Conte’s departure. We’ll never know what really happened, but we know Juventus are still the team to beat.

“We need to be ready for the start of the campaign. The fact we are on this US tour means we are a big club, but this is not the Champions League, they are just friendlies, albeit prestigious ones.

“Our primary objective is of course Serie A. I am ambitious and I want to win. We’ve been working together for a week and the team is happy to be united again. That is the best foundation to work from.

“We brought in more players because we’ll play a great deal from now to December, so need a competitive squad for every game. We’re almost at the finish line for this transfer session, but you never can tell right to the end.

“The only pressure on us will be from ourselves. We want to do better and that’s the only way to win. We play with enthusiasm and it will be a tougher year with the Champions League, but there’s no external pressure. We’ll approach it the way we always did.”

Roma have only played one friendly so far this summer, beating the Indonesia Under-23 side 3-1.

“With travel and games played so early, we have to focus more on fitness work than anything else. I had to go through tactics pretty quickly considering the situation.

“When we return to Rome, we’ll have three weeks to prepare better.”

Garcia already warned Miralem Pjanic and Daniele De Rossi will not play for “even a minute” against Liverpool, as they are coming off World Cup campaigns.

Gervinho, Douglas Maicon and Vasilis Torosidis are still on their post-tournament vacations.

“We mustn’t forget Liverpool begin their season 15 days before we do, so they’ve been training together for a while. However, I like to see the team with this positive attitude anyway.”
