Louis Van Gaal quits the Netherlands with third place in the World Cup. “This is the best group I’ve ever worked with.”

The future Manchester United Coach saluted this job with a bronze medal, beating hosts Brazil 3-0.

“This is the best group I have ever worked with,” he told NOS.

“We scored over two goals per game and conceded only four goals. The Brazilians have always been very friendly to us, whenever we met them during this stay.”

Holland ended the World Cup technically unbeaten, as they only lost to Argentina on penalties in the semi-final.

“That was the most awful way to go out. Losing 7-1 would’ve been clear, but we were so close to the World Cup Final.”

Van Gaal was able to set another record, as third choice goalkeeper Michel Vorm came on in stoppages to ensure Holland are the only team ever to use all 23 players in the World Cup.

“I was happy we were able to do that, but the squad asked for it, so this wasn’t all my decision. I told Vorm that if we were 2-0 up, he’d get time on the pitch.”

France in 1978, Greece and Russia in 1994 used all of their players, but at that time the squad limit was 22.
