“This is a great day for a great team, for the people, for my family and for everybody,” Sabella told reporters.

“This was Argentina’s best performance of the tournament in terms of balance and the quality of the football.”

It wasn’t all good news, as Angel Di Maria went off with a hamstring problem after just 33 minutes and is in doubt to feature in the semi-final.

“This is very damaging for us.”
