The Italy goalkeeper sprained his left ankle in training and has been ruled out of tonight’s World Cup opener with England.

He posted a message on Twitter and WhoSay that implied he could be out for the tournament, but his sister Guendalina was more encouraging.

“I was pretty worried about his condition. We sent each other some text messages this morning and Gigi lifted my spirits,” she told Rai Radio 2.

“There was a moment when he thought he had broken everything, but he’ll get away with a few days of treatment.

“We’ll have to wait for his debut in this World Cup, but soon he’ll be in great shape.”

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu will start tonight in Manaus, but it remains to be seen whether Buffon will recover in time for the second Group D match against Costa Rica on Friday.
