Gianluca Vialli believes Mario Balotelli has “earned his starting spot” for Italy in the World Cup against England.

There have been calls for SuperMario to be dropped in favour of Serie A top scorer Ciro Immobile, especially after the Torino striker netted a hat-trick in the 5-3 win over Fluminense last week.

“I think it’s only right to start with Balotelli,” Vialli told Sky Sport Italia.

“He had a very good Euro 2012 and Confederations Cup. He earned his starting spot in the Italy side, as long as he does the dirty work and plays for the team.

“Will it be Immobile’s World Cup? If it is to become his tournament, then we’ll see straight away if something happens.”
