Former international Paul Scholes wants England to go for the jugular in their World Cup campaign.

The ex-Manchester United man believes the Three Lions have been guilty of over-caution at previous major tournaments and sees this summer’s competition in Brazil as an opportunity for Coach Roy Hodgson to instil a new philosophy.

To do this, he says young talents such as Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley should be given the nod by Hodgson for Saturday’s opening match against Italy.

"I was watching the England vs Ecuador friendly in an airport lounge,” Scholes wrote on his Paddy Power blog.

"In the first half Ross [Barkley] went on a run and I thought, ‘Is that Rooney?' Barkley made me think of Wayne at Euro 2004. I had to take a second look because I thought it was Wayne.

"Now is a great chance for Roy Hodgson to give English football the identity we've lacked.

"Tell the world that this is how we play, attack! There is no point taking people like Raheem Sterling or Ross Barkley to Brazil 'for the experience'. Play them.

"Roy Hodgson has little to lose by going for the jugular. Will we be satisfied if England scrape through to the quarter finals playing negative football?”
