Andrea Pirlo admits he could reconsider his Italy retirement. “I intend to quit after this World Cup, but if I am needed…”

The midfielder spoke at a Press conference in Brazil and commented on the passage in his book about deciding to retire from international football after this tournament.

“As I already said, I am still thinking of retiring after this World Cup, as I have a certain age and it’s only right to leave the field to the next generation coming through. It would be pointless to continue.

“If I am needed, then there’s no problem in coming back. If I come on international duty and don’t play, then I’d get angry! It’s perhaps better I stay home…”

Pirlo was asked whether he was more concerned by Italy’s defensive frailties in recent friendlies or the goal drought for Mario Balotelli.

“We are working to improve both when defending and attacking. We are also watching back the games where we conceded goals and are trying not to repeat the same mistakes by using greater concentration.

“Strikers score for goals, so when they don’t come then perhaps he gets a little upset, but he just needs to focus on playing for the team and the goal will arrive as a consequence.

“It is the dream of every player to be at a World Cup in Brazil, the nation of football. It’s not something that happens often, so we have the chance to make this a World Cup to be remembered for all our lives.”
