Falcao had been working to regain full fitness in time to make this summer’s competition after suffering  a serious knee injury in January, but has been deemed not ready.

Udinese’s Luis Muriel and Cruz Azul’s Luis Perea were also confirmed as cut from the Coach’s provisional squad.

Perea is also out through injury, but Muriel’s omission was a technical one, as Jose Pekerman confirmed at a news conference sitting alongside the trio of unlucky players.

“It’s a sad day. With much regret, I have to say that Luis Perea and Radamel Falcao will not participate at the World Cup,” the Coach considered to reporters.

“Muriel will also not be there, but for a technical decision. I found this decision hard.”

Falcao also commented on having missed out on a chance to be in Brazil.

“I had lots of hopes but, well, we've got to press on and support the team from the outside and wish all my team mates the best for a good World Cup.

“Today, I'm in very good shape but conscious that I still need a bit [more time] to play again and I didn't want to deny a place to a team mate who was 100 per cent fit, nor do something imprudent to damage my health.”
