Roma and Mattia Destro have moved quickly to deny reports that the striker had turned down a reserve role in Cesare Prandelli’s World Cup squad.

Sky Sport Italia had led suggestions that the 23-year-old had turned down the offer of a role as the Azzurri’s ‘25th man’, to act as a first reserve striker should any of the five initially selected for this summer’s tournament pull out through injury.

However, the forward has made clear through a statement released by his club that this is not the case.

“Although I'm obviously disappointed, I've never refused any role in the national team,” Destro has said.

“I'll get straight down to work for a great season with my club and the national team which remains one of my main targets.”
