Italy Coach Cesare Prandelli has expressed his sorrow for Riccardo Montolivo and said the Azzurri are feeling dazed.

The tactician presided over the his side’s goalless friendly draw with Republic of Ireland but saw the Milan midfielder ruled out of the World Cup after he suffered a broken tibia.

Alberto Aquilani also went off injured on a difficult night for the Azzurri, though his withdrawal due to a head injury was more of a precaution.

“Unfortunately the match was blighted by injuries,” Prandelli admitted to Italian television. “We have been dealt a strong blow. For Riccardo unfortunately it’s something serious.

“This evening it’s difficult to give a technical assessment of the performance. At the end of the first half it was difficult to talk about the match considering the injuries to Montolivo and Aquilani.

“Rossi? We’ll assess his recovery, then we’ll reflect on things. Darmian made a very good debut.

“At the moment we are all dazed. Tomorrow we will decide the 23 [23-man squad].”
