Michael Ballack thinks Germany Coach Joachim Low should step down after the World Cup, even if his side win it.

The tactician is about to take charge of his fourth major tournament since succeeding Jurgen Klinsmann in 2006.

However, speaking to English newspaper the Daily Express, the former midfielder claimed that Low had only recently signed a new contract to remain as national boss in order to avoid questions over his future ahead of the finals in Brazil.

“The contract with him was extended so that no annoying questions arose during the World Cup,” Ballack said. “That was a clever move by the German Football Association, but I don’t think Low should continue.

“The pressure and weight of expectation on him would be too much. Even if Germany win the trophy he will probably go because there is no possible improvement after winning the World Cup.”

Low’s team are currently continuing their preparations for their campaign in Brazil at a training camp in northern Italy.

They arrived in the Alpine village of Passeier on Wednesday, where they are due to spend ten days. They will then return home for friendlies against Cameroon on June 1 and Armenia five days later, before flying to Brazil.

Italy for their part have two friendlies of their own as they warm up for the tournament. They play Republic of Ireland on May 31 before hosting Luxembourg in Verona on June 4.

Italy will be in London on Saturday May 31 to play the Republic of Ireland at Craven Cottage in their first warm-up game ahead of the World Cup.
