Javier Zanetti retires after 19 years at Inter and reveals why he turned down a move to Real Madrid.

The captain will hang up his boots this summer and saluted the crowd at San Siro after last night’s 4-1 win over Lazio.

“All the moments I experienced with this jersey were fantastic. Even in the difficult times I tried to honour this shirt,” he told Mediaset Premium.

“How do I want to be remembered? As a good person.”

Zanetti arrived at Inter in 1995 and stuck with them through thick and thin, even turning down an offer from Real Madrid.

“I was convinced that our time had to come. I couldn’t leave without winning here and I was proved right.

“There will be a commemorative game, but this was my last competitive match at San Siro.”
