Nicola was the Coach when the Amaranto earned promotion via the play-offs last summer and was recalled last week after a brief spell under Mimmo Di Carlo.

“I followed the team’s progress even from afar, because I feel tied to the players and the city,” said Nicola in his Press conference.

“From the outside I realised there were enormous expectations around this side. Most of these lads had never even played in Serie A before.

“At the start of the season we set the objective that we’d be fighting to stay up at the end of the tournament. There are four rounds to go and we are still there.

“When those games are over, we’ll see what we’ve done. We can end the season as heroes or as people who leave Serie A with heads held high knowing we’ve given all we can.”

Nicola had only been sacked on January 13, but was recalled on April 19.

“I think people realised we are perfectly normal folk who are doing everything for Livorno. I returned because either I pay for this campaign with the lads or I become a hero with them.

“I feel tied to these players and didn’t want to leave them alone fighting against anything and everything. I could’ve said no to a comeback, which perhaps would’ve been better for my career, but as I want to be good at this job it’s another opportunity to learn.”
