Vincenzo Montella praised “one of our best performances” as Fiorentina beat Verona in a 5-3 thriller.

“It was one of our best performances since I came to Fiorentina and I like it when the team plays with such quality,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We showed tactical acumen, timed our runs well and created so many chances. I was very happy to see my team play such attacking and attractive football.”

Alessandro Matri was benched, but scored a penalty when he had not been designated.

“Gonzalo Rodriguez was the penalty taker, but he decided to leave it to Matri and that’s fair enough. It was an important goal in a decisive moment of the match.

“Alberto Aquilani had an almost perfect performance, as he defended, he tied the play together and scored goals too.

“I was a little upset at conceding the late goal, but once I got into the tunnel I realised it was a good performance overall.”

Fiorentina face Roma next week and Montella recognises the merits of Rudi Garcia.

“If we were voting now, I’d give the Coach of the Year award to Garcia, because it’s truly complicated to work in an environment like Roma.”
