Roma forward Mattia Destro has today been handed a three match ban for punching Cagliari defender Davide Astori.

The offence occurred during the match between the sides last weekend, which the Giallorossi won 3-1 thanks to the 23-year-old’s hat-trick.

The only action taken by referee Davide Massa at the time was to caution Astori for his involvement, but with television footage having been reviewed Destro has now been issued with his punishment.

He will miss his team’s next four matches, having also picked up a yellow card during the same match which would have led to a one match suspension anyway.

It now remains to be seen whether he will remain in contention for a place in Cesare Prandelli’s World Cup squad, with the striker having fallen foul of the national team’s code of ethics.

Destro’s club teammate Daniele De Rossi was omitted from the Azzurri squad to face Spain after receiving a three match ban for committing a similar offence early last month.
