Vincenzo Montella said Fiorentina’s draw at Sampdoria was “basically fair,” but can’t bring himself to support Juventus.

“I think the game was played well and I accept the point because it is basically fair. The two teams faced each other openly, but it’s a shame we hit the bar,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 0-0 draw at Marassi.

“We tried to win right to the end despite playing in an all-new line-up. Now we’ll have a week to recover physically and psychologically.”

Alessandro Matri again failed to find the net and wasted some golden opportunities.

“Of course a striker feels bad when he doesn’t score, but he creates the chances and the only way out is to keep working and do the same things with a little more conviction.”

The crisis in defence saw Juan Guillermo Cuadrado as a makeshift right-back.

“Cuadrado can be more dangerous when starting deep. I moved him into a more advanced position when Vargas came on, but then Vargas had a slight injury and so it switched back.

“When you lack the sharpness physically and psychologically, it becomes difficult to play our style of football. We have created numerous chances, but haven’t been able to finish them off lately. Besides, don’t forget out strike force has been halved by injuries.

“I’d be happy with just one from Mario Gomez and Pepito Rossi, but they are both out!”

Fiorentina are still in fourth place and would need Napoli to drop points if they want to make a late push for the third Champions League spot.

“In theory I should support Juventus, but I can’t do it, not against my Napoli! Besides, if Napoli finish third then they might be less concentrated on the Coppa Italia Final against us.”
