Piero Ausilio has explained how Inter almost signed Cesc Fabregas, why they have let slip a number of youngsters and contract renewal plans.

The Nerazzurri are in a period of reorganisation behind the scenes and attention has fallen on plans surrounding sporting director Ausilio, who previously shared a lot of his role with the now departed Marco Branca.

“Since Thohir decided to invest in this club, I identified an individual responsible for scouting [rumoured to be Massimo Mirabelli, at Sunderland until June],” began Ausilio to the Gazzetta dello Sport today.

“And then a technical director does not have to be at Pinetina every day, where there is also a team manager like Ivan Cordoba and a technical consultant in Giuseppe Santoro.

“If we are strong and organised, it is not impossible for me to do alone what previously was shared between two.

“This does not mean that I would not be willing to work with anyone the club deems necessary.

“Mazzarri having increased responsibility? He has great personality, he lives his work 24 hours a day, follows the dynamics of the team just like someone else. I am alluding to Mourinho, yes.

“Fassone said he is a pillar, I say he is the foundation, because we can talk about his career, because we can already see a growing team, a different game, a solid defence, a point from which to start with for next year.

“We look at that, not the table – Mazzarri remains, regardless.”

Inter have seen a number of young stars pass through their books in recent years, only to flourish at other clubs. Notable recent examples include Leonardo Bonucci and Mattia Destro.

“The dream for those in my job is to create a team made up of kids who develop themselves with you.

“But certain waivers were decided so as to bring in more important players for the immediate – Bonucci, Acquafresca, Bolzoni, Meggiorini, so as to spend less on Milito and Thiago Motta.

“Destro at that moment too, because it was important to take Ranocchia.”

The troubled centre-back was the starting point for a series of questions on Inter’s plans for contract talks.

“A month ago we were clear with Ranocchia – we will look at negotiations at the end of the season. And we do not rule out a renewal arriving.

“Fredy Guarin’s agent has come in and we are talking about a contract – there is a mutual willingness to extend the contract.

“Ricky Alvarez is one we want to keep and he is happy here, whilst his contract expires in 2016, so we have more time to sign something.

“Cambiasso? We will talk with everyone at the end of the season, just like last year with Walter Samuel when he renewed inside five minutes. But who knows who won’t renew, there is Milito also, who gives quality and experience whilst even not as a starter.

“There is one perquisite – to leave out certain parameters in the contracts, the current ones.

“Is there a roof on this? It is cumulative – today the roof is €80m, in the 2010-11 season it was €180m, next year it will be between €70m and €80m.”

As part of the interview, Ausilio was asked of the one player he almost signed for La Beneamata, but who got away.

“Fabregas. At 16 he had decided to leave Barcelona and for us Pierluigi Casiraghi put us in a position to sign him – we tried, but he found Arsenal’s project more convincing.”
