Matias Vecino chose to leave Fiorentina on loan for Cagliari to follow the footsteps of Enzo Francescoli.

The Uruguayan made only seven Serie A appearances for the Viola this season and was loaned to the Sardinians on deadline day.

“Among the many Uruguayans who went through Cagliari, the first that comes to mind is Enzo Francescoli, but I am here to make my own story,” he said in his Press conference.

There is another Uruguayan at the club, Coach Diego Lopez, who is helping Vecino to settle in.

“It is good to have a Uruguayan Coach, but I have to prove my value on the field. I do have Italian ancestors, but the only thing I really know is that they came from Campobasso.

“I started out as a trequartista, but I’ve often played on the right or left side of midfield. I can play wherever the Coach wants me.

“I grew up a great deal in Florence, as even just training in that environment was very helpful. I left Tuscany to play more regular football.”

Bizarrely, Vecino made his Cagliari debut in a 1-0 victory over Fiorentina on Saturday.

“It was strange to beat Fiorentina just a couple of days after my transfer, but in football you must be concentrated to win.”
