Fiorentina confirmed there are fears Giuseppe Rossi damaged the cruciate ligament in his right knee for the third time.

“ACF Fiorentina announce that following a challenge from Livorno player Leandro Rinaudo, Giuseppe Rossi suffered a sprain to the knee that had already been operated on.

“Tomorrow more tests will be performed.”

The striker spent two years out of action when he snapped this ligament while playing for Villarreal in October 2011, going under the knife several times.

He had been on the verge of a comeback when it ruptured again during a training session in April 2012.

Rossi had rediscovered his form at Fiorentina and is current Serie A top scorer with 14 goals, also returning to the Italy squad.

Patron Andrea Della Valle was furious with Rinaudo after the match and told Sky Sport Italia the Livorno defender “is a hoodlum.

“We are very worried and don’t even want to talk about the game. Rinaudo didn’t even apologise and even argued with the referee in an undignified manner. I’d want to say so many things to Rinaudo right now. He should look at the replays and reflect on his behaviour.

“We await the test results tomorrow, but the situation does not look good.”
