David Moyes confirmed he tried to bring Roma hero Daniele De Rossi to Manchester United this summer.

“We certainly did think in the summer about bringing him here,” the manager told the Daily Star.

“I don’t think it went as far as a bid, because I think there was something to do with a deadline on his contract.

“But yes, he was a player we thought was a good player.”

This week De Rossi confessed he’d have “committed suicide” if he had left his hometown club for Old Trafford, especially as Roma have been revived and are now second in the Serie A standings.

The 30-year-old is nicknamed ‘Capitan Futuro,’ as he will inherit the armband once Francesco Totti retires.

De Rossi will start tonight’s Scudetto showdown with Juventus, kicking off at 19.45 GMT. Click here for a match preview.
