Vincenzo Montella hopes Fiorentina can start 2014 on the right foot against Livorno and confirmed “we’ll try to improve the squad.”

The Viola take on local rivals Livorno in the Derby di Toscana on Sunday at 17.00 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“We are responsible and the lads came back to training after Christmas in even better condition than I expected,” said Montella in his Press conference.

“I am confident in the work of the team. David Pizarro is training well, while with Alberto Aquilani or Massimo Ambrosini we have other emergency options in front of the defence.”

Livorno ended 2013 in crisis, as they are hovering above the relegation zone and are without a win in eight rounds.

“We must not get the wrong approach to this game. I hope the team will be concentrated, as Livorno need points and will do everything to get them against us.”

Montella was also asked about the January transfer window and a reported offer for Verona starlet Jorginho.

“A month of negotiations is a long time and that can affect some players psychologically. It would be better for everyone if the window were to be shortened,” insisted the Coach.

“Jorginho? He is an interesting player, but I know nothing about it. We’ll try to improve the squad, seeing as we have three competitions to take part in.”
