Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi lodged his appeal against a doping ban after his test was affected by cancer.

The former Milan, Genoa and Chievo man failed a doping test after the December 1 match against Cagliari due to elevated levels of the hormone hCG.

This hormone is often linked to tumours and further investigation found his cancer had indeed returned after a testicular tumour was removed in July.

The Disciplinary Commission suspended Acerbi via the usual procedure and today he presented his appeal to the TNA anti-doping commission.

His hearing will be on January 18 and he will remain suspended until at least that date.

Acerbi would not be able to play during this time anyway, as he is undergoing treatment for the cancer relapse.

After the first tumour was discovered, medics decided to only remove it and not use any medication, but it is believed the 25-year-old will now have a course of chemotherapy.
