Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi has broken his silence after confirming a cancer relapse. “I’d like to thank you all, one by one.”

The 25-year-old had a testicular tumour removed in July when it was discovered during a medical for his move from Genoa to Sassuolo.

On December 1 he failed a doping test, but it emerged the elevated levels of the hormone hCG were caused by a cancer relapse.

“I want to thank you all, one by one,” wrote Acerbi on his Twitter account.

“You give me the strength to face this difficult moment with courage and hope. Thank you from the heart.

“A very special thanks to my teammates, the directors and the doctors at Sassuolo who are doing everything possible to help me.

“Thanks again to the fans and the players of Milan, Pavia and Reggina.”

Those teams wore shirts urging Acerbi not to give up ahead of this weekend’s games.
