Vincenzo Montella sees a “psychological trap” for Fiorentina in the Derby dell’Appennino with Bologna.

It kicks off at 14.00 GMT on Sunday, click here for a match preview.

“Bologna have some excellent players and it can be a psychological trap because we played in the Europa League on Thursday night. We need to prepare the game on a psychological level as well as a tactical one,” he said during his Press conference.

“It is a dangerous match and a difficult one. The team is so far responding well to playing every three days. Of course, now the Europa League becomes a different competition with a much higher level of difficulty.”

Fiorentina have made their name as a spectacular side, complete with a 4-3 victory over Hellas Verona.

“We are conceding a few too many goals and need to improve on that, even if our objective remains to score more goals than our opponents,” added Montella.

“It’s not that I prefer winning 4-3 to 1-0, but this comes with time. I think that if we defended deeper, we wouldn’t win. This team was built with certain characteristics.

“We are happy to have our philosophy, our identity and that our fans appreciate us for that. Some want to paint us as a side meant to win the Scudetto, but that is not the case.”

The Coach has also been responsible for reviving the career of Juan Manuel Vargas, who seems to have put his hard-partying ways behind him.

“Do you see him around at night? No, right? He has found himself again and is not quite at the top yet, but he has the right head on his shoulders to improve and I like that.

“Josip Ilicic is improving, then the performances will show whether he is in good shape or not. I get the sensation he’s doing better, though he can’t play 90 minutes yet.”

The Viola are seeded in the Europa League draw on Monday and Montella was asked who he’d prefer to face.

“In February it’s quite cold, so I’d prefer to play somewhere warmer. Porto? Yes, that might be warmer…”
