Montella: 'Ilicic will improve'

Fiorentina Coach Vincenzo Montella has faith in Josip Ilicic and felt it was “difficult to find space” against Pacos Ferreira.

The Tuscans had already qualified for the Europa League knockouts, but lost their 100 per cent record with a 0-0 draw in Portugal this evening.

“It was difficult to find space tonight, as our opponents put 10 men behind the ball,” Montella told Sport Mediaset.

“It’s a shame we didn’t win, but the lads tried to score until the 95th minute.”

There was a lot of squad rotation for this game, yet Ilicic again put in a disappointing and almost anonymous performance.

“He needs to play, as this cannot be the Ilicic we know. He has been unlucky so far with the Viola, as he arrived with a few fitness problems and picked up another injury straight away.

“This slowed down his process of settling into the team, but we will soon see him in his best shape.”

Fiorentina will go through top of Group E as long as they avoid defeat to Dnipro at the Stadio Franchi in the final game.
